Julia, 45
It’s the fluid bond with the water, the connection to the natural world and the always-a-little-dangerous immersion in the elements. And it’s unbeatable.
I am sailing, free from the challenges of my work in the finance side of things, where I make some seriously sleek spreadsheets. I can parse data like a pro, but prefer to skipper a skiff on the bay, belt along on the bike, swing the sword at fencing class or get decadent with a Dewar’s and lime.
When the art auctioneer’s hammer hits, my spine tingles. I just love to collect work from different artists, sometimes at bargain prices, but it’s the living canvas of my Australian bush garden that really moves me. The gurgle of the wattle birds in the Grevilleas I grew make me smile.
I’ve been to many exciting places, waited tables and worked as a fashion model. Now it’s the spontaneous pas de deux I miss – the dance of communication. The history I imagine: the clatter of two hired bicycles on ancient cobblestones, with a demi and baguette for two in a backpack. The little tapas bar where the banter flowed into the night. The two State Theatre ticket stubs I found in my jacket from last month’s show, remembering how we laughed.
Because you got me. And I got you.
What I’m looking for
The satisfaction, the nestling, where we bond over our shared good taste. An active life, where we do, as well as simply be. Time together, where the connection comes easily. A travelling partner. If you like the theatre and ballet, that’s a bonus, but I’ll be going anyway!
