We both brought our dogs.
I left mine with her while I went to get coffee. He did what dogs do on a walk; I came back to find she had picked it up and found a bin.
I was impressed. We had emailed, and there was no doubt: she was a stuck-up snob. Nothing wrong with that. I am a snob, but none of us is defined so narrowly. She collected the dog droppings with her own bag and dealt with it. She was a considerate, thoughtful person, not just to her date, but to the public environment.
Before the virus struck, many of our female clients told us that men they’d met on line either resisted or refused to meet and walk, which we think is by far the best first date. Coffee’s good too – but I am writing this during lockdown and that simple pleasure will return in better times.
A first-date-with-alcohol will tempt even the most outgoing type but you should say no. Do you and your date really need the booze to relax, or will it mask deeper issues, and the clarity you need? You will form a clearer, more sober picture of each other without alcohol. If you both like each other, there will be plenty of time to get on the sauce. Think about a first date-walk like a pre-job interview – you’re sizing each other up to see if you fit. If you click, keep walking and get coffee to go, hopefully without the dog mess. If there’s no spark, keep it short and move on.
It’s surprising what people reveal on a walk. How they acknowledge and treat others along the way, what they notice about you and the environment and how their gait and body language make you feel.
Go for a walk. You can learn a lot.
